Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams declared his decision to back former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a ā€œdeceptive figure and a untruthful personā€ and alleging of having ā€œa history of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā€ Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Adams changed his position, stating he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he holds strong support.

ā€œI think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how critical this election is,ā€ Adams commented.

The mayor further explained, ā€œThey have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.ā€

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, ā€œI’ll be with Andrew this evening.ā€

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
