Rampant Heart of Midlothian Overpower Meek Celtic to Go 8 Points Clear
Match summary
- Hearts' attacking duo earn Hearts win and send them eight ahead at summit
- Callum McGregor cancelled out early Murray own goal
- Hearts go 13 league matches unbeaten for the first occasion in over two decades
The dominant Edinburgh side surged eight points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish top flight to strengthen their early-season title credentials and deepen the struggles around Brendan Rodgers' side.
A superb goal from Kyziridis and a spot-kick from Shankland gave Derek McInnes' side a 3-1 lead that the title holders could not recover from.
Dane Murray - among three youth players in the Celtic XI - slashed into his own net in the early stages to put Hearts ahead at a bouncing their home ground, and it was the youngster's infringement that led to the spot-kick.
A stylish finish from McGregor of the season had swiftly equalized the first goal, and the Swedish attacker almost put Rodgers' team in front, opting for finesse over power and allowing the Hearts keeper to make a crucial stop.
But the unstoppable Hearts side regained dominance to consign the visitors to successive league defeats for the first time since 2023.
It also gives the Hearts a significant lead at the summit.
The previous occasion they were so far clear was in the 2005-2006 season under George Burley, when they ultimately finished second - one of just four occasions that a team has failed to win the title after building such an advantage in the last three decades.
The Hearts coach, whose former team were runners-up to the champions on four occasions, has been at pains to play down title talk, as the club seek their first top-flight crown since the 1960s.
The Celtic boss has seen it all before at the club - both perfect and shaky beginnings to a season. He's yet to finish second best.
But on the weekend's performance, this Hearts team showed they deserve serious consideration.
Analysis: Hearts Capitalize of Depleted The Visitors
The Edinburgh side started with the self-assurance of a side unbeaten in the league this season - fans' favourite Kyziridis delivered a ball for the striker to stab wide.
The Glasgow team didn't help themselves with some unusual sloppiness in possession and they faltered under their first real examination.
Claudio Braga's header was touched on to a post by the Celtic keeper and the follow-up from Shankland was diverted goalwards by the hapless defender, in for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Celtic grew into the contest and started building moves. From a flowing attack, Sebastian Tounekti released the full-back to square for McGregor, who slotted home.
Aside from the Nygren chance, Celtic struggled to create much for lone frontman Jonny Kenny or his substitute Yamada amid the unavailability of stricken attackers their key strikers.
Hearts regained their intensity and versatility in attacking from across the final third. Kyziridis, one of the finds of the club's relationship with shareholder Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics, struck low past Schmeichel from the just outside the area.
Almost straight away, the defender tripped Braga in the right side of the box and Shankland scored. And it could've been an more comprehensive victory, had replacement Ageu not been stopped by Schmeichel.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in two incidents involving big-money recruit Engles.
The midfielder's wayward free-kick delivery was in stark contrast to his European display in the Europa League win over their Austrian opponents and the Belgium international was then booked for a professional foul.
Post-Match Comments
The Hearts manager: "You see how hard the players work, the togetherness. That's not sufficient on its own to win games week in, week out.
"Our strength lies in, is skillful players. You're witnessing it from a lot of players who have been here previously. Some of the new signings are keen to demonstrate their quality.
"We've got a good thing going at the minute, but it's just one win. It's crucial for us to maintain this form. We've got much work ahead, plenty to improve. After the first two rounds is normally an indication of your standing."
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We failed to push up when the ball went back as a line so when they pass the ball, they should have players offside but didn't. We have got to do better with the attempt.
"There's still so many points to play for. It's only the beginning. It's just nine matches. Clearly, being eight adrift is not ideal. The positive is there's numerous fixtures to play.
"We now have to focus on the present and look to find more consistency and better performance in our play."
Upcoming Fixtures for Both Sides?
The Glasgow club are back at home on midweek against promoted side Falkirk (evening kick-off). At the same time in the Scottish Premiership, the Edinburgh outfit are at their opponents' ground.
