Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
A Landmark Year and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.
Influences and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
