The Grisly Animated Film Ending That Stays With Audiences
Among every adult-oriented animated films I’ve ever watched, nothing has stuck with me quite like the dread-soaked ending of the explicitly bloody as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker developed a dark, somber and often savage world with a few small , desolate glimmers of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it came from a desire to expand animation further, the director explained that it was more an attempt to convey a universal, multicultural theme regarding “the shared root of every conflict.”
That idea is conveyed by means of a group of brightly hued teddy bears , openly modeled after a popular line of lovable figures.
Growing up in a society focused on militarism as well as the defense industry, numerous the bears are fixated on killing unicorns, because of a sacred text which states the bears they used to be rulers of the forest, until the unicorns expelled them.
Some have not completely fallen for the propaganda, and prefer to experiment with narcotics and mate in the woods.
In contrast to their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters display sexual organs , definite urges.
For a particular particularly cruel, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the conflict against unicorns becomes a path toward dominance — and especially to supremacy above his gentler, kinder brother Tubby.
This bear behaves aggressively , an obvious psychopath , and when terror overcomes his unit and claims his teammates one by one, he seizes increasingly power for himself, in increasingly gory, harmful methods.
Simultaneously, the horned creatures are suffering their own terror, as an expanding, harmful creature in their woods.
“Initially, it feels like a humorous movie,” the director said. “However it evolves into a more dramatic and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it transforms into a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like among the playful films by a legendary filmmaker, that discover a wicked pleasure in letting animated figures curse, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Afterward it evolves into more akin to a more grim movie by that same creator, including ever more visual gore , a noticeable relation to genuine tragedy of battle.
By the end, it is a complete Grand Guignol carnage.
The horror which makes the film an ideal spooky-season viewing kicks in a lot earlier than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the most dedicated fans of gore, for fans of extreme cinema who wish to view a movie they have not watched previously, and who can handle a story that offers unflinching brutality.
View it with the lights off with no disturbances, and that ending will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
