The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
