Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event.
